Nutritional goals to prevent and treat osteoporosis may include to:  
  • Eat according to Healthy Eating Guidelines, with attention to the recommendations for number of servings and portion size for each of the four food groups. 
  • Ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.
  • Ensure vitamin B12 status is adequate. If over 50 years, obtain vitamin B12 from fortified foods or a supplement.
  • Ensure intake of protein is sufficient, according to International Dietary Reference Values.
