[C] The following conclusions are supported by limited evidence or expert opinion:
Iron studies are difficult to interpret in individuals with CF due to the chronic inflammation and infection that can occur, causing serum ferritin and transferrin saturation values to become unreliable for assessing iron deficiency. Serum ferritin appears to underestimate iron deficiency and percent transferrin saturation appeared to overestimate iron deficiency in individuals with CF.
