Lycopene is a red-orange carotenoid found primarily in tomatoes, tomato-derived products such as tomato sauce, tomato paste and ketchup, and in other fruits such as pink grapefruit, watermelon and apricots. Suggested mechanisms for lycopene's role in reducing prostate cancer risk include its potent antioxidant capacity, its ability to down-regulate certain androgen target genes, its ability to promote cellular apoptosis and its ability to block IGF-mediated proliferation (1-4).
