The selection of low GI foods has been recommended for individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes as a strategy to help optimize glycemic control and potentially support the treatment of co-morbid conditions. Selecting low glycemic index foods is also recommended to reduce the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes in those at high risk.
