For healthy term infants, national dietary guidelines consistently recommend exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months of life. At around six months of age infants have additional nutrient needs and are physiologically and developmentally ready for new foods and textures, with the goal of eating a variety of foods from all food groups at one year of age.
