Description
The spinal cord is the largest nerve in the body, running the entire length of the vertebral column (1). It is also the pathway for messages travelling between the brain and the rest of the body. After a spinal cord injury (SCI), all the nerves above the level of injury keep working normally, but at the level of injury messages are blocked from being transmitted to the part of the body below the level of the injury.
