[A] The following conclusions are supported by good evidence:
Elevated iron stores and iron overload is common among individuals with thalassemia; particularly with thalassemia major because of regular blood transfusion therapy. It also occurs with thalassemia intermedia because of elevated iron absorption. Even with chelation therapy iron levels can be high.
