Major Functions of the Liver

  • Biosynthesis and secretion of bile.
  • Metabolism of macronutrients and micronutrients; processing of nutrients for storage in liver, transport to peripheral tissues, and/or generation of energy.
  • Biosynthesis of major transport proteins ( e.g. albumin, transferrin, prothrombin (factor II).
  • Detoxification of nutrients and drugs (e.g. bilirubin, ammonia, alcohol).
