Major Functions of the Liver
- Biosynthesis and secretion of bile.
- Metabolism of macronutrients and micronutrients; processing of nutrients for storage in liver, transport to peripheral tissues, and/or generation of energy.
- Biosynthesis of major transport proteins ( e.g. albumin, transferrin, prothrombin (factor II).
- Detoxification of nutrients and drugs (e.g. bilirubin, ammonia, alcohol).
