Individuals with type 1 diabetes are at higher risk for celiac disease than the general population. Individuals with type 1 diabetes often present with ‘silent’ CD, where there is intestinal villous atrophy, but no symptoms. Both of these conditions necessitate significant, but different, alterations to a regular diet. Controlling both diseases is important to avoid long-term complications and to promote optimal health.
