Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism. Excessive uric acid can lead to the development and deposition of monosodium urate crystals into joints and soft tissues and result in gout. A primary aim of gout treatment and management is to decrease serum uric acid levels. Key findings and recommendations include those related to the effect of the following on uric acid levels and development of gout or the management of existing gout:
  • dietary purines
  • alcohol
