Disease Etiology
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease, which occurs when the body mounts a dysregulated immune response, attacking healthy cells and leading to multi-system chronic inflammation (1). There are several types of lupus, including discoid and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The etiology of lupus is unknown, but thought to be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental and hormonal factors. SLE is the more common form of lupus, comprising about 70% of cases (1).
