When breastmilk is not an option or not selected for infant feeding, then infant formula should be selected based on the nutritional and medical needs of the infant. Commercially sterile liquid formulas should be used for those infants at greatest risk of infection. Infants considered at greatest risk include preterm infants, low birth weight infants, immunocompromised infants and the youngest of infants (particularly neonates, but also infants under two months of age).
