Gastrointestinal System - Infant Colic Background 

 
Disease Etiology
The etiology for infant colic remains undetermined; it is likely multifactorial (1,2). An underlying, medical or physiological organic cause is identified in less than 5% of infants with colic (3). 
 
Possible causes and associations include:
  • gastrointestinal disorders such as food allergy, immaturity of gut function, dysmotility, excessive gas formation, intestinal hormonal abnormalities (4), microflora, molecular absorption, potential allergy to cows
